The Ashfords Foundation is delighted to have awarded a grant to Tectona Trust, a Plymouth based Charity that supports those in Recovery.
Sailing Tectona CIC, the operating branch, provide week long sailing trips along the south coast and beyond. With the support of Tectona Trust, Sailing Tectona is developing their shore base where they will teach volunteers theoretical navigation, traditional woodworking and shipwrights skills, as well as providing a space where past voyage crew can meet up and share their experience to support one another in their ongoing recovery process.
The voyages allow individuals to become an efficient sailing team through the process of taking the boat to sea. Teamwork, communication and resilience are all developed daily whilst hoisting sails, navigating and living onboard. These skills often allow people to make positive changes in their lives after the voyage.
The Ashfords Foundation is delighted to have awarded a grant of £500 to help set up a drop-in centre and kitchen area beside their office so that volunteers have a base to visit when the boats are at sea. This base will allow the Trust to provide vital support to volunteers and provide a valuable meeting space for project planning. The money will also help fund simple furniture and basic kitchen equipment.
The Ashfords Foundation has been established with very clearly defined objectives to support smaller charities and community organisations through two grant programmes: Supporting Communities and Preserving Communities. The first offers one off grants of up to £750, while the second supports established charities and not-for-profit organisations develop a solid foundation for the future, helping them build sustainability for the long term with grants of up to £5k. In each case, the project for which funding is sought should be local to one of Ashfords’ offices in Exeter, Bristol, London, Plymouth, Tiverton and Taunton. Further details are on the Foundation’s website: www.ashfordsfoundation.org.uk
Jennifer Davis from Tectona Trust commented: "We are delighted that Ashford's Foundation awarded us this money to help provision the kitchen area at the shore base. It's important for volunteers to have a comfortable space to sit down in to be together and to be able to have hot drinks when they are working so hard on the volunteer days. Thank you very much!"
Chair of Trustees, John Toth, said: “We wanted to see how we might make a real difference in the communities in which the partners and employees of Ashfords live and work. As a result we set up the Ashfords Foundation last year. This has not only allowed us to bring together all of Ashfords' charitable giving but it has also helped build a sense of common purpose among our people. I am pleased that we have been able to support the Tectona Trust with this grant.”
